CHIME – An Extended View
[2025]
[wordpremiere International Film Festival Rotterdam 2025]
The kinetic sculptures of Rotterdam based visual artist Jeanine Verloop are literally captured in a different lens with CHIME – An Extended View. This debut film records the vibrating three-dimensional glass strings of Verloop’s eponymous installation in 1,000 frames per second. The striking results reveal the motions in installation that are invisible to perceive by the human eye. Condensing time like this, CHIME – An Extended View becomes a meditative reflection on our perfection of time, and the expansion of perceptual horizons through technology.

CHIME – An Extended View is an exploration of temporal expansion through the use of high-speed cinematography. Using the Phantom Flex 4K camera at a 1000 frames per second, the film captures the subtle and often imperceptible movements of three-dimensional glass strings vibrating at their resonant frequency. Inviting viewers to immerse themselves in reality beyond time and their visual perception.
The film captures the behavior of three-dimensional glass strings activated by low-frequency vibrations. These vibrations induce mesmerizing movements in the glass strings, motions that are typically too fast or delicate for the human eye to perceive in real time. By decelerating these phenomena, the film transforms what would otherwise be a fleeting moment into a prolonged and detailed visual experience.
This temporal expansion is more than merely a technical feat. By immersing us in this slowed-down world, CHIME – An Extended View compels us to consider that reality and time extend beyond our immediate sensory experiences. The film is a meditative exploration of how technology can expand our perceptual horizons and deepen our connection to the world around us.
