The TSTST Foundation is an interdisciplinary group of young Rotterdam visual artists. TSTST strives to create nomadic art spaces and an online platform that showcases artists who exist at the intersection of art, media, and technology.
A nomadic existence requires a playful and flexible way of thinking. A playing field to orientate, share knowledge, experiment, and create something with a network of like-minded people in a relatively short time. TSTST is a test site, primarily a space for experiment and research.

Our ambitions originated on Meent 80 in the old Albert Heijn supermarket. Testsite Meent was our first test case: an exhibition space, run by artists around media and technology. With changing window displays, we brought everyday passers-by into contact with non-conventional artworks. Test site Meent originated from collaboration and experiment, TSTST Foundation is the natural continuation.
The organization is characterized by its entrepreneurship, temporary forms of cooperation, self-organization, and interest in media and technology. The current organization of TSTST consists of; Jeanine Verloop, Sanne Schilder, Caio Vita, Jeroen Rijnart and Jochem Walboomers. Our team composition is dynamic in line with our core value of cooperation. As a network organization, we want to work in teams of experts in varying compositions.
The founders of TSTST share the following artistic principles.
- All contemporary art is made in the context of the post-internet era.
- Power is embedded not only in functioning technologies but also in dysfunctionality.
- History is not linear, it has not “been”. Old technologies lie beneath the surface serving as building blocks for modern developments.
- Hacking and repurposing old technology is a viable alternative to throwaway consumer culture, planned obsolescence is a sin.
- With a DIY mentality, any space can be utilized in a variety of ways.
- Art and science (and thus technology) exist in overlapping fields, as they have always done.
- It is pertinent that technology is critically assessed through art
- As with scientists, artists should strive to see the world in new ways and communicate that vision.
- A popular saying is that “everything in art has already been done” but through new technology new artistic expressions become possible, so this statement cannot be true.
- But even so; nothing is made within a vacuum.
The aim of the foundation is to present and research contemporary visual art. With an experimental attitude, we want to test existing institutes for their ability to meet the needs of the new generation of artists. We initiate and develop research-based projects and thematic exhibitions. By using online and temporary spaces (anti-squat) within the city, we are a nomadic platform.
